What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition that results in damage to the optic nerve and retinal ganglion cells. It is most often caused by an increase in pressure within the eye. The pressure within the eye is also known as the intra-ocular pressure (IOP).
A backup of fluid (aqueous humour) within the eye causes this increase in pressure. Aqueous humour normally flows from behind the iris, where it is produced, to the front of the eye and then drains through the outflow channels of the eye (trabecular meshwork). Clogging of the outflow channels results in a backup of aqueous humour within the eye. Over time this pressure buildup can cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to a loss in vision.
